Great Planes Ultra Sport 40 ARF (Red)

July 28, 2007

Flew three very nice flights today. The aircraft handled and performed beautifully as usual.

I flew the UltraSport40 at the SPRC club annual Turkey Fly. The gear repair held up well and the plane flew great. I put in 3 flights today.

September 9, 2006

I repaired the right main gear and straighted up the left main just a bit. The left main gear wire was bent slightly in a cross wind landing early in the plane’s career.

Maintenance Log

Lanier Mariner Maintenance Log

takeoff

January 9, 2007

I resecured the lead weight into the nose.

I put a real connector clip on the battery extender so it can’t even think about pulling free.

I packed the nose a bit better with bubble wrap to protect the battery and keep things from shifting around.

I repaired the torn covering off one of the hull lifters. I bit of it got torn off when flying off not quite deep enough snow. I must have snagged a chunk of ground or rock at some point.

Mariner Snow Flying

Lanier Mariner Snow Flying

January 1, 2007

Temps in the high 20’s, winds 5-10mph out of the NW, not a cloud in the sky. A perfect day for flying!

I had one early dead stick on climb out, but managed to turn back home, miss the trees on the far side of the field and land gently in a field and skid to a stop.

The engine was way too lean. On my second flight it was still too lean and had another dead stick landing, but later in the flight. Again, no damage except for some missing covering …

Piper Cub Photo Shoot (Floats)

Photo shoot from my maiden flight off floats.

I finally got organized enough to get my Cub up to my parent’s lake. There is a small thin sheet of ice forming at the middle of the lake so this is most likely my last chance to fly off water this year.

Comments

3 things I need to address: 1. One of the servos is draining the battery *way* too fast. My voltwatch is warning of low voltage long before I burn through the first tank. 2. It is somewhat tail heavy … flyable, but you have to be 100% hands …

Mariner 40 Water Flying

Lanier Mariner Water Flying

takeoff

November 25, 2006

Probably the last water based flight of the season. First flight with the new Tower .46, but I’m still struggling with engine outs and mixture problems. I may want to replace the fuel tank to see if that makes a difference. This aircraft is still bad luck, but still in one piece and a lot of fun when it’s all working!

November 11, 2005

Today we had unseasonably warm weather (high of 61F!) so I shifted around my work schedule so i could fly in the afternoon. I replaced my aging/ailing transmitter battery and needed to test the new one.

The 4* is a lot of fun to fly … quick, nimble, easy inverted flight, tracks really well through …

Hangar 9 Piper Cub

Hangar 9 Piper Cub Ultra Series (ARF) w/ Floats

This turned out to be a deal I literally could not refuse. It was listed as ‘local pickup only’ on ebay and I ended up being the only bidder. After church on sunday, I burned rubber down to Madison to pick it up. There was a major winter storm bearing down on us and I wanted to get back before things got too bad. The last hour or two of the drive home saw a mix of precipitation, ice, snow, rain, but the …

Thunder Tiger Tiger Bipe 40

Thunder Tiger Tiger Bipe 40

Purchased: May 23, 2004 (from ebay)

This is a partially assembled ARF I bought in a moment of weakness. Much of the assembly work was already done so it only took me an evening or two to of work to get her ready to fly. She flies like a dream – tons of fun. She is very aerobatic; quick, nimble, and light to the touch, but has pretty long moments so is also stable. All in all a very nice flier.

November, 2003

This little beauty comes ready to fly. I’ve been having a blast with it. I can fly it in the field behind my house. It’s a great plane for flying on a whim.
